When you try to write a story or a poem, do you sometimes find yourself thinking:
“My writing is rubbish”
“I cannot write”
“I bet I’ve made lots of mistakes”
If so, you are not alone. Most writers feel like this at some point. Even the most successful and well-known writers’ experience self-doubt from time to time. But most especially when they are starting out. It is even harder for children who are still in school/college, as you are told you need to write a certain way and in a certain amount of time to pass your exams. If you struggle to do this, you can often feel that you cannot write. Yet in truth, this is only one part of writing.
I feel that the most important thing you need to write stories and poems is:
I D E A S
Without ideas, what do you write about? Ideas are essential to creative writing. You need to let your creativity and imagination loose – this is where the ideas come from.
When writing, this is what you need to concentrate on first. Jot down any ideas that come to you whenever they come to you, including any words and/or sentences that might pop in your head.
The bit that most people worry about, the reason a lot of you might think you cannot write, is down to not being sure how to write the ideas down, about getting it down in the right way and without any errors. This comes down to:
T E C H N I Q U E
The great thing about technique, is that as hard as it can be, it can be learnt. It can be worked on, you can get better with practice.
The best way to learn how to write – is to write and write some more
Don’t be afraid to keep writing, even if you feel it isn’t any good or if someone else says so. The only way to get better is to keep going, keep writing.
You can learn technique as you go along
You will get better with practice
So keep going – keep writing!
